The Collapse of a Trust Symbol

For years, the blue checkmark on social media platforms symbolized trust. It meant that an account truly belonged to the person or organization it claimed to represent.

Then that trust collapsed.

When Twitter (now X) introduced paid verification without proper identity checks, anyone could appear “verified”. The result was predictable: impersonation, misinformation, fake authority — and confusion for millions of users.

This was not just a product mistake. It revealed a much deeper structural problem of the internet.


When “Verified” No Longer Means Verified

Under the new system, verification became a purchasable badge rather than a proof of authenticity. Accounts impersonating companies, public figures, and institutions spread rapidly.

In some cases, fake verified accounts caused real-world harm — from market manipulation to false emergency announcements.

The European Union later fined X under the Digital Services Act for misleading users about what verification actually meant.

The message was clear: visual badges without real verification are not trust — they are deception.

Fake accounts succeed because they scale.

A single actor can control hundreds or thousands of accounts, each appearing independent. Algorithms cannot reliably distinguish between:

  • or 100 people amplified by bots

Engagement becomes a misleading signal. Popularity becomes an illusion.

This is not a failure of moderation. It is a failure of architecture.

Many people assume that the only way to fix this is by forcing users to reveal their identity.

That assumption is wrong.

What platforms actually need is not identity — but personhood.

  • one person controls one account (or a limited number)
  • certain claims, such as age group, are true
